Ransomware
Ransomware is a kind of malware. Cybercriminals use it to steal information as well as lock you out from your devices or encrypt files so that you can no longer access them until a ransom is paid, usually in cryptocurrency.
While criminals may make promises to unlock your devices, decrypt your files or not to leak or sell the information, there’s no guarantee they’ll stick to it . There’s also the danger that paying a ransom incentivizes the attackers to target you repeatedly in the future for more payments.
