Account compromise

An account compromise is when cybercrooks get access to your banking, email or other personal or business accounts without your permission or you knowing about it. Criminals often do this to steal valuable information or carry out nefarious activities like fraud, extortion or blackmailing. They may also try to impersonate you to trick friends, family or colleagues into giving them money or downloading malware.
